“A very different set than Teldec's Bach 2000. The Hanssler Bachakademie, supervised by Helmut Rilling, is not HIP (historic instruments performance). The orchestras are warm and lush (but not huge). The soloists are, in general, extraordinary. The tempos are sane. Hanssler has included fragments of some incomplete BWV's that are not included in the Teldec set; a minor plus but appealing. I found I preferred these traditional instruments and the daring using of forte-piano in place of harpsichord on a few of the recordings (flute sonatas). Highlights for me are The Well-Tempered Clavier Books 1 and 2, Musical Offering, Flute Sonatas, The Motets. I also found I prefer these Cantatas recordings to any other, including the new Koopman, Suzuki and the well-known Leonhart-Harnoncourt. While not the newest recordings, the sound is warmer which I prefer to the new state-of-the-art HIP recordings. Although most of the Cantatas are older recordings, much of the Hanssler Bachakademie edition is newly recorded for this project and the sound is consistent and excellent.

Spirituals and Folk Hymns (1850-1870)

“This is a recording about a surprising phenomenon: The vigorous survival, in the Northern part of the United States, of folk-inspired religious hymnody.

It is well known that the "folk" element in American church music, after a start in eighteenth century New England, migrated South during the nineteenth century. In the South, shape-note hymn books like the Sacred Harp and the Southern Harmony, first published in mid-nineteenth century, have maintained, even into the present day, a style of folk-hymnody that was thought to have disappeared in the North. In the South, too, has flourished black people's congregational music, so powerful and compelling that the musical term "spiritual" has understandably but incorrectly come to mean "black religious music" for much of the general public. So the schema was supposed to be as follows: In the South, folk styles; in the North, politer church music that followed (or attempted to follow) the "rules."

What a surprise, then, to find authentic, idiomatic folk hymns and spirituals in song books compiled and published in the North! For if it is mainly true that Northern hymnbooks of the nineteenth century contain for the most part academic, watered-down Victoriana, a few prints show that the other, more vigorous tradition was indeed alive in the Northern states.

“The earliest traces of notated two-part music actually appear from the end of the 10th century in central France, with theoretical discussion surviving from the 9th century. The former are the famous Chartres Manuscripts, the source of the present recording. It was once thought that this music (organum) was not recoverable, because it is not written with specified pitches. However when the theoretical treatises are combined with the notation, it becomes fairly straight-forward to learn the notes (according to Wulf Arlt who was principally responsible for this reconstruction). This crusade (never to be fullfilled) had the purpose of recapturing (for the Christendom) the City, η Πόλη, then recently fallen to Mehmet Qanuni (or Fatih, as you wish). We could hear the beautiful Dufay's Lamentation for η Πόλη in a previous recording by the EGB.
